Canada-US Trade War Escalates as Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect

Source: Xinhua Finance

Canada's retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on 27.6 billion Canadian dollars (about US$20 billion) worth of U.S. goods officially took effect on the 8th. The White House said the same day that the United States would ban imports of Canadian alcoholic beverages and other products, and add more items to its tariff list. Canadian Prime Minister Carney then rallied the public to confront the trade war.

Jiang Wenran, founding director of the China Institute at the University of Alberta, said in an interview with Xinhua that the dispute is no longer merely about tariffs, marking a shift in Canada-US relations from "deep integration" toward "strategic restructuring." He proposed a three-stage framework of "high-pressure confrontation — negotiating while fighting — long-term restructuring," and argued that the reshaping of Canada-US relations would last a decade or even longer.
