A teenage boy has died after being shot in North York on Monday afternoon, Toronto police say. The shooting happened at around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Jane Street and Finch Avenue West.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a trauma centre, where he was later pronounced dead. Supt. Jack Gurr told reporters it was a “very, very sad day.”

“There is a family in our division who has been traumatized and has a loved one that’s not coming home,” he said. “For the person who did this, get a lawyer, and turn yourself in.” Police have not released any suspect information.

2. Federal government expected to announce airport legislation

The federal Liberal caucus hastily called a meeting with its MPs on Monday to discuss the future of Canadian airports, according to multiple sources. Those sources told CTV News that only MPs, and none of their staff, were allowed on the call.

One MP who was on the call said it focused on the sale of Canada’s four biggest airports — Toronto-Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau, Calgary and Vancouver — and opening them to foreign investment. That MP said an announcement from Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon about giving investors stakes is expected Tuesday, with legislation coming this fall.

The MP added that several caucus members “voiced alarm” that the sale was being presented as a “fait accompli.” The call came as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s inaugural Canada Investment Summit got underway in Toronto, aiming to court $1 trillion in investment over the next five years.

3. RBC report: more than half of parents help adult children financially

A new report by RBC says just over half of Canadian parents with adult children are still helping them out financially with expenses including groceries and rent. The report found 51 per cent of parents with adult children aged 18 to 40 provided financial support in the past year.

Of those helping out, 56 per cent said the money went toward groceries, while 43 per cent helped with an unexpected or emergency expense and 24 per cent helped pay for rent. On average, parents provided $6,151, with 24 per cent giving more than $10,000.

The report was based on an online survey of 1,000 Canadian parents with children aged 18 to 40, conducted between July 2 and July 8.

4. Federal offender wanted on Canada-wide warrant

A federal offender known to frequent the Greater Toronto Area is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant by the Provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad. Bradley Elliott is accused of breaching his statutory release.

Elliott is described as a white male, 42 years old, standing five-foot-nine (175 cm) and weighing 165 pounds (75 kg), with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is currently serving a four-year-and-one-month sentence for offences including identity fraud, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a conveyance and motor vehicle theft.

5. York police release video of officer tackling motorcyclist

York Regional Police have released video footage of an officer tackling a motorcyclist who investigators allege fled from police after failing to stop at the scene of a crash. The incident occurred on Aug. 9 in Richmond Hill.

According to police, a 42-year-old motorcyclist was arrested near 16th Avenue and Mural Street after refusing to pull over for an officer. Police said the man had been involved in a collision and refused to return to the scene to exchange information before fleeing, despite being told he was under arrest.

Video captured from a body camera and police cruiser showed an officer sneaking up behind the motorcyclist, who was parked on the road, before tackling him to the ground. No injuries were reported. The man was charged with failing to stop after an accident, flight from a peace officer, driving with no insurance and using a plate not authorized for a vehicle.

6. Date set for Regis Korchinski-Paquet inquest

A date has been set for the inquest into the death of an Afro-Indigenous woman who died in the presence of Toronto police in the spring of 2020. Dr. Richard Wells, Regional Supervising Coroner for Toronto West Region, announced Monday that the inquest will begin on Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m.

The hearing will be conducted by video conference, with Dr. David Cameron serving as the presiding officer. The inquest will look at the circumstances surrounding Regis Korchinski-Paquet’s death and is expected to last 14 days and hear from around 15 witnesses.

Korchinski-Paquet died after falling from a 24th-floor balcony of an apartment building in Toronto’s High Park area on May 27, 2020. The 29-year-old woman’s death sparked protests in Toronto calling for changes to how police respond to mental health crises.

7. Toronto fall registration opens this week

Registration for the City of Toronto’s fall programming is set to open this week for a range of activities, including after-school programs, swimming lessons, skating classes and camps. Registration for older adults aged 60 and over opened Monday morning.

For residents in Toronto, East York and Etobicoke, registration opens Tuesday at 7 a.m., while residents in North York and Scarborough can register Wednesday at 7 a.m. Programs range from sports, music and cooking to fitness, with costs from free drop-in programs to more than $160.

The city recommends creating or activating an account before registration opens, as spots in popular activities can fill up quickly. CampTO registration for ages four to 16 will open at the same time.

8. Marineland site seeks investor as Niagara tourism strategy unfolds

The sprawling Niagara Falls property that was once home to Marineland has attracted the attention of at least one investor, as the province launches a strategy to unlock the region’s “full potential.” Niagara Parks CEO David Adames said an active investor is currently looking at the property.

In an interview Monday, Adames said the property, which spans hundreds of acres and is exclusively zoned for tourism, is “looking for a new life.” As part of the province’s “Destination Niagara Strategy,” the province is looking for an investor to help create a “marquee theme park” in the region.

Other properties slated for redevelopment include the Toronto Power Station, a former hydroelectric station overlooking the Canadian Horseshoe Falls that will reopen as a five-star boutique hotel with a free museum and art gallery. The $300-million project, funded entirely through private-sector investment, is expected to take four years to complete.

9. CBSA deports 111 people amid extortion crackdown

The Canada Border Services Agency says it has removed 111 people from the country as part of a nationwide crackdown on foreign nationals suspected of links to extortion and organized crime. The deportations stemmed from 188 removal orders issued over the past year, with the bulk occurring in British Columbia and the GTA.

The initiative began in the Pacific and Prairie regions in August 2025 before expanding to the GTA three months later. Of the 188 removal orders, 91 were in the Pacific region (58 removals), 47 in the Prairie region (30 removals) and 50 in the GTA (23 removals).

“The removal of more than 100 individuals linked to extortion activities reflects CBSA’s sustained efforts to identify, investigate and take action against those who pose a threat to our communities,” said CBSA president Erin O’Gorman.

10. PM Carney responds to Trump's trade comments

Amid comments from U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend that his administration could reach a trade deal with Canada “fairly soon,” Prime Minister Mark Carney says he still has hope. In a Bloomberg interview Monday, Carney reiterated his belief that a “mutually advantageous” deal is still possible.

“One that respects our sovereignty, respects obviously the U.S. sovereignty, respects our cultural institutions, and that is a possibility,” Carney said. “We’re ready to sit down and negotiate that and move it forward.” He added: “I welcome the president’s comments.”

After trade talks broke down last month, both countries slapped new tariffs on each other’s imports. Carney said there’s “not a pride thing” and that Canada is “ready to sit down” to do what’s right for the Canadian people.
