1. York University confirms data breach affecting online forms since 2007

York University said Sunday it is investigating a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the theft of personal data. The school said an unauthorized actor accessed information belonging to individuals who completed online forms on select websites, such as residence applications and surveys, spanning 2007 to October 2026.

The breach, discovered on Oct. 25, was limited to a specific list of websites and faculties posted on the university's website, the school said. York University said a small number of directly affected individuals had their government identification or financial account information exposed. The school said it immediately began an investigation alongside external experts.

Investigators found no evidence that the unauthorized actor moved beyond the affected websites or accessed other parts of the university. The school said affected individuals will be contacted directly and should remain alert for suspicious emails, text messages and phone calls, particularly communications asking for personal information or directing them to unfamiliar websites, and should monitor their financial accounts. York University is offering two years of complimentary TransUnion credit monitoring and identity theft protection to those whose government or financial information was exposed.

The incident was reported to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and to law enforcement. "We recognize that this incident may be concerning to you," the school said in its release. "We take that seriously and regret these circumstances."

2. Quebec parent says 4-year-old stepson ate Halloween chocolate containing cannabis

Source: CP24

A Quebec parent is warning the public after she says her stepson was hospitalized after eating chocolate he received on Halloween that contained cannabis. Rebeka Lefebvre said she took four-year-old Mylan to the hospital last Thursday after he said the chocolate he ate tasted weird and he was drooling.

Lefebvre said the nurse at the hospital said he seemed to be OK and discharged them, but as they were leaving, Mylan fell to the floor, started crying, and his heart rate shot up really fast. She said a urine test conducted at the hospital detected traces of THC, the psychoactive chemical that produces the "high" when consuming cannabis.

"I think it's appalling that people are capable of doing things like that. It's not supposed to happen," Lefebvre said in an interview on Sunday. "At that moment, we were filled with questions, anxiety, and stress, and fear. There were so many emotions overwhelming us at the sight of our child like that."

She said the Surete du Quebec are now involved, and an SQ spokesperson told CTV News that an investigation is underway. Lefebvre says she checked Mylan's Halloween candy beforehand to make sure there wasn't anything harmful and, to her, nothing looked out of the ordinary. Since the ordeal, she has issued a warning on social media to be vigilant with Halloween candy, and said she has also been the target of negative feedback from others who are blaming them for the situation.

"As parents, I find it really sad to be going through this situation because we're two parents who don't use drugs and don't drink alcohol," she said. Dr. Christopher Labos, a cardiologist at McGill University Health Centre, said if a child consumes cannabis, it should be taken very seriously. Parents should consult a medical professional or the Quebec poison control centre, which can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-463-5060. "At the extreme, for a young child that gets a very, very high dose they can actually develop seizures, lapse into a coma, and sometimes even die," he said. Mylan is recovering at home now.

7. Brampton man charged after illegal street racing, dangerous driving investigation

Police in Peel Region have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man from Brampton who allegedly participated in multiple illegal races while operating a vehicle without licence plates and concealing his identity with a ski mask. Peel Regional Police say on Aug. 30, just after 1 a.m., officers saw a red BMW M3 taking part in a street race near Explorer Drive and Satellite Drive in Mississauga.

Investigators then allegedly observed the same vehicle racing on two separate occasions on Sept. 26. As a result of their three-month investigation, police identified the driver as Tarman Toor, 24, of Brampton. On Oct. 28, police executed a Criminal Code search warrant at a home in Brampton. Toor was subsequently arrested and charged with three counts each of dangerous operation, disguise with intent, and race a motor vehicle. The allegations have not been tested in court. He is scheduled to appear before a judge at a later date, police say.

So far this year in Peel Region, police say they've laid 214 stunt driving charges and have made 119 Highway Traffic Act-related arrests. "Keeping Peel's roads safe remains a priority for our service. Illegal street racing is a clear and present danger to all roadway users," Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said in a release. He also commended the Safer Roads Team "for their dedication in identifying and arresting individuals whose actions put our community at risk." Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Safer Roads Team at 905-453-2121, ext. 3730.

8. Another suspected arson destroys Ormstown pizzeria; mayor seeks meeting with province

Source: CP24

The mayor of a small municipality south of Montreal says he has requested a meeting with the province's Domestic Security Minister after a series of suspicious fires targeting small businesses. "A fourth fire has occurred on Lambton Street — and it is now the fifth fire in our region in only a few months. This situation is unacceptable," Ormstown Mayor Philippe Besombes wrote in a social media post on Sunday morning.

His post comes hours after a pizzeria on Lambton Street was burned to the ground in what provincial police described as a case of suspected arson. The Surete du Quebec said they received a call at 2:30 a.m. Sunday and responded to Sara Pizza. SQ spokesperson Louis-Philippe Ruel said the business was a total loss. No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing, he said.

Ruel said the same business had been targeted by another suspicious fire earlier this week, which resulted in one arrest. Mayor Besombes said he has met with the SQ three times over the last few weeks about the suspicious fires but that "more will need to be done." "I have therefore requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Public Safety so that this situation is taken seriously and concrete actions can be discussed quickly. This cannot continue," he wrote on Facebook.

Domestic Security Minister Guy Lapointe Jr. said he is scheduled to visit Ormstown on Monday to meet with Mayor Besombes, MNA Frederic Laplante, and members of the SQ "to take stock of the situation and to speak with them." "Like Mayor Besombes, I am very concerned about the situation in Ormstown. The residents of this municipality have a right to feel safe in their community," the minister wrote in a social media post on Sunday. He said he shares the "concern, anger, and frustration felt by many residents and business owners" following recent incidents. "A repeated series of events like this cannot be treated as normal. The safety of our residents, our businesses, and our community must remain an absolute priority," he added.

On Sept. 20, the mayor said on Facebook that the Express 57 restaurant was targeted by a suspicious overnight fire for a second time, and that it came a few weeks after another fire that destroyed the Casa Venezia restaurant on Lambton Street.

10. Nvidia launches investigation into CEO Jensen Huang over foreign intelligence concerns

Source: CP24

Nvidia announced Sunday it is launching an independent investigation into its chief executive and founder, Jensen Huang, over concerns he was the "target of a foreign intelligence effort." The statement was published on the company's website.

It comes after U.S. officials expressed concern over Huang's relationship with Alice Huang, a former executive of Megaspeed, a Singapore-based company. The two are not related. Separately, Huang admitted having an extramarital affair in a note to staff, though he did not name the woman. The Financial Times previously reported that U.S. officials believed the two were in a romantic relationship. Several outlets have reported that American officials suspect Alice Huang has fed intelligence to China and helped smuggle advanced artificial intelligence chips to the country. Nvidia is the world's leading chipmaker amid the AI boom and has a market capitalization of about US$4.5 trillion.

The company previously said in a statement that Jensen Huang's meetings were "not unusual or unexpected. Meetings with customers are part of a CEO's job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year." It added that any concerns about illegal chip diversion were "debunked last year." Nvidia said a committee of independent directors and outside counsel will oversee its investigation.

"The Board prioritizes U.S. national and economic security, which is paramount to the interests of NVIDIA and its shareholders," the company said. But the board "has no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised." "Today's news will not slow NVIDIA. Jensen is committed to continuing to lead NVIDIA as CEO without interruption," a spokesperson for Nvidia told CNN. Jensen Huang, 63, said that he was "unfaithful" and hurt his wife and children in the note to Nvidia staff. "I take full responsibility for what I did and the hurt I caused, and I accept the criticism that comes with it," Jensen Huang said, adding that he supports Nvidia's investigation. "I am committed to protecting NVIDIA and supporting America's national security."
