Amazon.ca has the Kobo Libra Colour 7-inch e-reader (white, 32 GB) for $388.80 CAD, against a $423.67 list price. Prime members ship free; otherwise orders over $35 CAD qualify for free delivery.

The real difference between Kobo and Kindle is that Kobo doesn't lock you to one store. Books bought from Kobo, ebooks borrowed from your local library through OverDrive, articles saved to Pocket, EPUBs sitting in your own Google Drive — all of it opens on the same device. In Canada, library ebook lending is a substantial free catalogue, and being able to use it directly is worth a good chunk of the price gap.

The Libra Colour uses a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 panel. Colour shows up where it actually matters — covers, comics, illustrated guides, highlights — while body text keeps the matte, non-glowing quality of black-and-white e-paper that stays readable in direct sun. No phone or tablet does that. It weighs 200 g, light enough to hold one-handed for an hour without your wrist complaining.

Physical page buttons and grip

The physical page buttons on both edges are why a lot of people pick the Libra over smaller rivals: lying on your side in bed, one thumb press turns the page — no lifting an arm to tap glass. IPX8 means 60 minutes in two metres of water, so bath reading doesn't require a zip bag. 32 GB holds roughly 24,000 ebooks or 150 audiobooks. The shell uses recycled and ocean-bound plastics, and Kobo makes a point of repairability.

A few real caveats before you buy. Magnetic cases confuse the sleep sensor and the device will randomly go to sleep mid-page — avoid magnetic covers. There's no microSD slot, so 32 GB is the ceiling; heavy comic readers should do the math. Colour needs the front light on more than black-and-white does, so battery life is shorter when you lean on it. And if you want to annotate with a Kobo Stylus 2, the pen is sold separately.

4.5 stars across 636 reviews. This isn't a tablet replacement — if you mostly watch video or read glossy magazines, get a tablet. But if you read a dozen-plus books a year, your eyes are tired of screens, and you'd rather not be tied to a single bookstore, this is the most complete option going.
