Sennheiser HD 599 Open-Back Headphones — Velour Comfort, Natural Soundstage! $179.95 CAD (36% Off)

Amazon.ca has the Sennheiser HD 599 open-back headphones at $179.95 CAD, down from $279.95 — 36% off. Prime members ship free, otherwise free shipping on orders over $35.

The HD 599 tops Sennheiser's 500 series: open-back, 50 ohms, 106 dB sensitivity, 12-38,500 Hz. Nothing dramatic on paper, but it isn't fussy about sources — a phone or laptop drives it fine, a dongle DAC or sound card makes it better, and you don't need a desktop amp.

Open-back means the cups are vented: sound leaks out and room noise comes in. The upside is a wide, natural soundstage with clear positioning for games and films. The trade-off is zero isolation — no transit, no open office, no shared room. Decide where you'll listen before you buy.

The ear pads are velour, which breathes far better than leather. Three or four hours in, your ears aren't sweating, and you don't get the flaking and black crumbs that pleather pads develop. Padded headband spreads the weight, no clamping. Pads are replaceable, so a worn set doesn't mean a new pair of headphones.

Two detachable cables are included: 3 m with a 6.3 mm plug for amps, interfaces and TVs, and 1.2 m with 3.5 mm for phones and laptops. Generous at this price.

There's more low end than people expect — it isn't the thin, clinical sound some associate with "monitoring". Pop, rock and game soundtracks all hold up. If you want noise cancelling or something to wear outside, this isn't it. For listening in a room or dorm, 6,000+ reviews at 4.5 stars and $180 is about as safe as this price bracket gets.
