Amazon.ca has the iSpring FP500 first-stage 5-micron sediment filter for $38.59 CAD (list $89.66, 57% off). Prime members ship free; otherwise free over $35.

This is stage one on the RO5004F series tankless reverse osmosis system — the filter that sits in front of everything else and catches sand, silt and rust down to 5 microns. It looks like the least interesting part of the setup, but it decides how long the next two stages and the RO membrane last. Sediment reaching the membrane is a few-hundred-dollar replacement.

The body is chemical-resistant polypropylene, moulded in one piece with no glued seams, so it keeps flow high without deforming. iSpring rates it for six months; in practice it depends on your water — municipal supply around the GTA usually gets 5–6 months, older iron-pipe buildings or well water more like 3–4, and falling flow or an earthy taste are the signals to swap early. At 30.5 cm tall and 8.9 cm across, it's a five-minute job: unscrew the housing, seat it, screw it back.

One heads-up: this filter has gone out of stock for months at a time, and reviews from earlier this year are mostly people waiting for it to come back. If you run an RO5004F, having a spare on the shelf at this price makes sense. It's at 4.7 stars over 10 reviews, mostly along the lines of “same as the original, fits exactly.”
