Lock detail

The point of a TSA lock is that screeners hold a master key: they can open it, inspect, and relock the bag instead of cutting it off the way they will with an ordinary padlock — which leaves your zipper hanging open for the rest of the trip. You set your own three-digit combination, so there is no key to lose.

The body is a 30 mm metal housing, and the shackle is vinyl-covered. Checked bags get thrown and crushed on the belt, and a bare steel shackle scratches up the shell; that coating is there for exactly that. The shackle runs 38 mm long and 16 mm wide, which threads through standard luggage zipper pulls, including double pulls.

Four locks breaks down sensibly: one checked bag, one carry-on, one backpack, one spare at home or on a kid's school bag. It sits at 4.4 stars over 136 reviews — a small sample, but this is a long-running Master Lock model rather than a new experiment.

Works out to under $10 a lock, less than buying one at an airport kiosk. Small hardware like this rarely goes on sale at all, so 17% is a real dip.
