Radon is not a fringe concern in Canada. It's an odourless gas that seeps in through foundation cracks, and prolonged exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Health Canada's reference level is 200 Bq/m³, and without measuring you have no idea which side of that line your house sits on. A professional test runs $100–$200 for a single snapshot; a meter you keep is more useful.

The HOUND-1011 uses a semiconductor sensor with a range of 0.09 to 1000 pCi/L, switchable between pCi/L and Bq/m³. It starts measuring on power-up, shows a first reading within 6 hours, then updates hourly. The LCD displays averages for the past 6/24/48/72/96 hours, and history goes back as far as 504 days — enough for both a quick check and long-term tracking. At 290 g with a stand and lanyard included, it sits happily in a basement, bedroom or office.

Power comes over USB-C, so you can leave it plugged in indefinitely; the internal battery holds 45 days in sleep mode for travel. The 36-month warranty is longer than most in this category.

Two quirks worth knowing, both repeated in reviews. First, the unit stops logging once it goes to sleep — keep it on USB-C, or wake it every few days if you want continuous data. Second, high readings right after start-up are normal: the sensor absorbs radon during factory testing, so blow a fan into the intake for a few minutes and restart. Humidity above 90% also skews results, so a dehumidifier in the basement helps.

469 reviews at 4.2 stars, ranked #2 in indoor air quality meters. Sixty dollars for a number you can actually trust about your own house is a reasonable trade.
