At its core is a 24.2MP back-illuminated 35mm full-frame ExmorR CMOS sensor (25.3MP total) delivering up to 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities and accurate colour. The updated BIONZ X engine shoots full-resolution stills at up to 10 fps with continuous AF/AE tracking — up to 177 standard JPEGs, 89 compressed RAW, or 40 uncompressed RAW frames.

On video it records 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) across the full width of the sensor with oversampling for fine detail, and Full HD at 120fps up to 100Mbps for 4x/5x slow motion with AF tracking. The ISO range spans 100–51200 (expandable to 50–204800 for stills), and it outputs 14-bit RAW even in silent and continuous modes.

Focus and stabilization are the highlights: 5-axis optical stabilization gives about a 5-stop shutter advantage, while 4D FOCUS pairs 425 contrast AF points with a 693-point focal-plane phase-detection system covering ~93% of the frame.
