Radon is hard to avoid in Canadian homes, especially anything with a basement or sitting on granite. Health Canada recommends keeping long-term indoor averages under 200 Bq/m³, and above that you're looking at better ventilation or a mitigation system. A professional test usually runs one to two hundred dollars and won't necessarily run for months, which is where a portable monitor like this earns its place.

The HOUND-1011 uses a semiconductor sensor with a 0.09 to 1000 pCi/L range, switchable between pCi/L and Bq/m³. The first reading takes about six hours, then it updates hourly. The screen shows the past 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours, and history goes out to 504 days — long enough to see a full seasonal cycle, which matters because radon typically peaks in winter. Testing through one winter tells you far more than a one-week sample.

It runs on USB-C for continuous monitoring, and the internal battery is rated at 45 days in sleep mode, so it travels fine. It arrives ready to use with a stand and lanyard.

Two things to know up front: there's no alarm, just a numeric display, so you have to check it yourself; and a high reading right out of the box is normal — residual radon from factory testing needs a few minutes of airflow and a restart. The brand isn't well known in Canada, but 457 reviews at 4.1 stars is a reasonable sample.

If you have kids or just bought an older house you plan to stay in, sixty-odd dollars buys you the answer to "do I actually need mitigation" — cheaper than guessing.
